The short answer
You should not normally have to pay an entry fee simply for your child to sit a state grammar-school selection test. Grammar schools are state-funded, and local selection tests such as the Kent Test are part of the admissions process.
That does not mean 11 Plus preparation is cost-free. Families may choose to spend money on workbooks, digital subscriptions, mock exams or private tutoring, but those are optional.
What is free?
The state-school application through your local authority is free, and the official selection test for a state grammar school is generally free. Official familiarisation material is also often available without charge from councils, grammar-school consortia or test providers.
Always register through the official authority or school route. A paid tutoring company selling a “registration package” is not the same as the official test registration.
What might you pay for?
Books and practice papers can cost from a few pounds per title. Online platforms usually use monthly or annual subscriptions. Commercial mock exams charge per sitting, while private tutoring can range widely by location, tutor experience, one-to-one versus group tuition and whether the tutor specialises in a particular selective area.
The total can therefore be close to zero for library-led self-study or run into hundreds or thousands of pounds for long-term private tuition.
Do you need a tutor?
No. A tutor can be useful when a child needs targeted teaching, accountability or specialist knowledge of a local test, but tutoring is not an admissions requirement. Many children prepare using school learning, books, free familiarisation papers and structured home practice.

How to keep preparation costs sensible
Start with the target school’s admissions policy and official sample material before buying anything. Then identify the exact gaps. If vocabulary is weak, a verbal-reasoning book may help more than another full mock. If timing is the issue, one well-run mock may be more useful than several new workbooks.

What about independent-school entrance exams?
Independent schools are different. They may charge application or registration fees and use their own entrance assessments. Do not assume the “11 Plus is free” rule applies to private-school admissions.

Bottom line
The official state grammar-school test should not be the expensive part. Preparation spending is a family choice. Build a plan around your child’s actual needs first, then spend only where a resource solves a specific problem.
